NIMHANS to host three-day national workshop on adolescent mental health and life skills

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) has announced a three-day national workshop to strengthen preventive mental health strategies through a life-skills approach.

Scheduled for 18–20 January 2027 at the Dr. M. V. Govindaswamy Center in Bengaluru, the training program—titled Promotion of Mental Health and Psychological Well-Being of Adolescents Using Life Skills Approach—will equip frontline professionals with practical, evidence-based tools.

Adolescence represents a critical transitional phase marked by heightened vulnerability to emotional, behavioral, and social challenges. According to NIMHANS, early exposure to competitive environments and social pressures often leads to risk-taking behaviors and psychological distress.

The workshop centers around NIMHANS’ Promotion of Mental Health and Well-Being (PMHWB) initiative, a universal program designed for school settings. The initiative focuses on building resilience, coping mechanisms, and core psychosocial competencies in young people to prevent psychological issues from escalating into clinical conditions.

Unlike conventional academic seminars, the upcoming session is designed as an interactive, skills-based training. Participants will work directly with NIMHANS-developed promotive mental health modules and receive certification upon completion.

The initiative targets key stakeholders directly involved in youth development and healthcare, including school counselors, social workers, mental health professionals, and doctors.
