The Maharashtra authorities introduced comprehensive rules on January 8, 2026, targeting academic pressure on schoolchildren, with private coaching centers now subject to the same requirements. This step addresses rising student suicides through counseling mandates and class hour limits. District oversight ensures quick grievance handling.
Larger coaching institutes must appoint full-time psychologists for over 100 students, while smaller ones link up with nearby mental health experts. Helplines such as Tele-MANAS appear prominently on premises, connecting to hospitals and crisis lines. Programs teach life skills, stress coping, and substance avoidance alongside studies.
Class timing restrictions
Coaching sessions are limited to five hours daily, banning pre-dawn or late evening classes and enforcing one test-free weekly holiday. Centers should avoid public score rankings or grouping by marks, sharing results privately with families. Admission forms should also state clearly that success remains unpromised.
District panels, headed by collectors with education, health, and psychology members, will conduct checks and resolve complaints swiftly. This resolution, from the School Education and Sports Department, draws from the Supreme Court coaching reforms.
