The mental health of employees across the globe has been rapidly deteriorating since the pandemic. Along with affecting their well-being, it also leads to lower engagement and productivity, and higher attrition, insurance costs, and absenteeism at work.

Earlier in 2022, to find out the root cause and dig deeper into the issues, the McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) surveyed nearly 15,000 employees and 1,000 human resource professionals from 15 countries, including India.

Globally, approximately one in four respondents reported signs of burnout and in Asia, one in three respondents reported the same.

In India, four in ten participants reported high levels of burnout, distress, anxiety, and depression and 90% said that the predominant reason was a toxic workplace.

Due to this, Indian employees were ready to quit their jobs 60% more than the global average.

MHI also noted a 22% gap between how employees and employers define and perceive mental health. According to MHI, despite organizations being committed to improving mental health and emotional well-being, employers often miss the big role that the workplace has in determining well-being, performance, engagement, and other factors.
